When selecting stainless steel wire mesh for harsh chemical environments, marine hardware, or high-precision filtration, choosing between Grade 316 and Grade 316L is one of the most critical decisions. While both alloys belong to the molybdenum-bearing austenitic family—offering far superior pitting corrosion resistance than standard 304—their carbon content creates key performance differences.

At Milesen, we manufacture both 316 and 316L woven wire cloth to exact international standards. Here is a clear breakdown of how they compare and how to choose the right spec for your project.

1. The Core Difference: Carbon Content

The primary distinction between 316 and 316L lies in the chemical composition:

  • 316 Stainless Steel Mesh: Contains up to 0.08% carbon. It delivers robust tensile strength and excellent resistance to chlorides, bromides, and acidic solutions at moderate temperatures.

  • 316L Stainless Steel Mesh: Contains a maximum of 0.03% carbon. This lower carbon threshold minimizes carbide precipitation during exposure to high heat, making it the superior option for welded mesh structures.

2. Weldability and Intergranular Corrosion

When wire mesh undergoes heavy welding, fabrication, or custom framing:

  • High welding heat causes carbon in standard 316 to combine with chromium, forming chromium carbides along the grain boundaries. This depletes the surrounding metal of chromium, leaving the weld seams vulnerable to localized intergranular corrosion.

  • 316L drastically reduces this risk. Because of its lower carbon content, 316L maintains its corrosion-resistant passive oxide layer even after extensive welding, eliminating the need for post-weld annealing.

3. Temperature Range & Mechanical Strength

  • High-Temperature Performance: Standard 316 retains slightly higher mechanical strength and creep resistance at elevated operational temperatures compared to 316L.

  • Corrosion Resistance in Ambient Environments: Under non-welded, room-temperature conditions in mild to moderate corrosive media, both 316 and 316L offer virtually identical protective performance.

4. Application Selection Guide

Application Environment

Recommended Grade

Key Reason

Welded Filter Discs

316L Mesh

Prevents weld-decay and intergranular corrosion at heat zones.

Marine Hardware & Offshore Filtration

316L Mesh

Resists severe saltwater pitting without risk at joining welds.

Chemical & Pharmaceutical Processing

316L Mesh

Complies with strict purity standards with minimum contamination risk.

High-Temperature Non-Welded Sieves

316 Mesh

Provides slightly higher mechanical strength under heat stress.
