That covers general fabrication, architectural trim, freshwater systems, and low-corrosion industrial screening where the operating chemistry is mild. If the environment is dry and indoor, or if the process fluid is fresh water or a neutral solution, 304 delivers the corrosion resistance required at a lower alloy cost.

When 316L justifies the premium

316L is generally the preferred specification when salt, chlorine, acid-based cleaners, or marine spray is present. The alloy cost premium runs roughly 30, 40% over comparable 304 mesh, based on standard industry pricing differentials for molybdenum-bearing austenitic grades. Frame that as a longevity calculation: a mesh that pits and requires replacement after one season in a chloride-heavy environment is not the economical choice, regardless of its unit price.

Beyond 304 and 316L, specialty grades fill specific niches: 321 for thermal cycling applications, 310S for sustained high-heat duty, and 430 for decorative indoor uses where corrosion demands are low.
